Kevin Jorissen has 10 years of experience in computational science. He holds a Ph.D. from the University of Antwerp (Belgium) and worked as a postdoctoral researcher at the University of Washington in Seattle, the EPFL in Lausanne, and the Universität Zürich. As a physicist, he developed software solving the quantum physics equations for light absorption by materials. His work improved theoretical calculations of X-ray absorption (XAS) and electron energy loss spectroscopy (EELS), and is included in the FEFF9 and WIEN2k codes. Kevin also taught workshops to scientists worldwide, and was an early adopter of high performance scientific computing in the cloud. This combination of better software, teaching, and access to cloud resources enabled more scientists to apply cutting-edge simulations in their research. It was a natural transition for Kevin to join Amazon in 2015 to help accelerate the adoption of cloud computing in the scientific community globally. He engages with scientists in various disciplines, represents AWS in academic-industry partnerships such as the Berkeley RISElab and the NSF BigData Hubs, and is responsible for projects such as the AWS Researcher’s Handbook and the Global Data Egress Waiver for Research.
