• AWS CLOUD SERVICES FOR RESEARCH COMPUTING AND HPC

    Researchers are increasingly bringing their HPC workloads to the AWS cloud. In this presentation, we will visit AWS capabilities, real-world examples, and best practices, to shine a light on:
    - AWS services that make scientific computing accessible to everyone – from new HPC virtual server types to personal HPC clusters in the cloud;
    - New approaches to HPC, including serverless computing;
    - How AWS works with the research community and supports science.

The ability to generate, access, manage and operate on ever larger amounts and varieties of data is changing the nature of traditional high-performance computing. The extraction of meaningful insights from Big Data, enabling real time and predictive decision making across a range of industrial, commercial, scientific and academic domains, requires computation techniques similar to those that have traditionally been characteristic of technical computing. We are entering the era of Cognitive Supercomputers, driven by the convergence in workflow requirements, including analytics, modeling, visualization, and simulation. This is a time of significant disruption, in which data is emerging as the "critical" natural resource of this century. In this presentation, we summarize the new challenges in system design and utilization arising from this disruption, as well as approaches to address those challenges through Data Centric innovations being applied in multiple areas, open ecosystems, workload-driven co-design, integration of heterogeneous compute elements, and software enablement for heterogeneous systems.
